Dear international family of artists, and all sorts of creative individuals.
After two decades of being absorbed in the extreme, rapid, and sometimes violent rise of the internet and its new established reality, where our lives are lived through screens of social media, resulting in a disconnection from our surroundings, we propose a reinvention of reconnecting experiences through the arts & nature!
Our proposal is to embark on an innovative short-term, nomadic, communal living, experiment on a boat, close to the sea, where artists from various disciplines can cooperate, interact, co-create and explore the concepts of co-living, co-feeling, co-thinking, and traveling on the sea. This extraordinary journey will take place on the magical boat ΛΑΦΡΗ / LAFRI.
This can be viewed as a healing experience, in response to the pressuring issues of alienation of our times. Or as an experiment for a first hand examination of a nomadic model for conviviality, that will bring together different locations through artistic processes. Or a reflection per se on the processes of community making, in the enclosed space of a 15m sailing boat, that at the same time promises an escape.
During our voyage, artists will come together on LAFRI to engage in their respective art forms.
At each anchorage, of the journey, whether it be a port, beach, cove, bay, or any other scenic location, the creators will find unique ways to share their stories. They will connect with one another, as well as with the local communities and surroundings, by showcasing their art in various settings such as docks, sandy shores, town squares, rocky cliffs, caves.
Each participant may choose to join or depart at different ports along the route outlined below.
At these ports, some artists may disembark while others may come on board. The boat is designed to accommodate 5 to a maximum of 12 people, featuring 5 water closets, 4 cabins with double beds, 1 salon bed, 4 deck mattresses, and 1 hammock. Our aim is to travel with 6 people.
We will commence our journey from Volos on September 15th, and it will conclude on October 10th at Lavrio (Athens).
The creative works and experiences gathered during this voyage will be presented, in Athens at Calderone Art space in winter 2023-2024.

We will explore funding opportunities from the EU or other art-supporting institutions based on the success of this experimental trip. The aim is to secure support for future artist workshops or similar projects on the sea with LAFRI. We envision filling the months of April to June and September to October next summer with workshops led by this year’s participants, as well as new artistic communal experimentation projects on the sea with LAFRI.

For this inaugural year, we kindly request a contribution of at least €20 per person per day towards the boat expenses. The regular prices would range from €90 to €180, but considering this venture as a long-term investment for all involved, we leave it to your discretion. Additionally, participants will be responsible for covering extra expenses such as food and port fees (up to a maximum of €25 per night per boat). The participants, referred to as the “Crew,” will be expected to assist the captain whenever required and ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of the boat for everyone’s benefit.
We recommend a minimum 5 day participation.
We encourage participants to follow the whole journey.
Applications will be examined depending on:
– length of time participating. Or port & date of embarking – disembarking.
– creative occupation(field of interest/research). And vision inspired by the project.
– previous sailing experience.
– previous communal living experience
– vacancy
– equipment required & availability or logistics acquiring it on board(example: speakers, instruments, paints, etc)
